At 4802 feet, Mt. Moosilauke rewards the hiker with fantastic views
of Franconia Ridge and the Presidentials.
Starting at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, which is owned by Dartmouth College, Bob and Eileen (shown)
ascend on the Gorge Brook trail.
The summit is above treeline and has fantastic views of the White Mountains, Vermont, and
the Adirondacks on a clear day.
In 1860, the Prospect House hotel was opened on the summit of Mt. Moosilauke. The building's name
was changed to the Tip-Top House and given to Dartmouth College in 1920.
Students operated the house as a hiking hut during the summer months. Unfortunately, it
was destroyed by fire in 1942. Part of the stone foundation, where Bob is shown relaxing,
remains today.
